Paddle failed payment recovery

Paddle Billing retries failed renewals itself. What it can’t do is chase the customer across channels until they act. Revnio connects to your Paddle account and gets past-due customers to update their payment method while Paddle’s retries run.

What Paddle does on its own

As merchant of record, Paddle runs payment recovery for subscription renewals: when a payment fails, the subscription becomes past due and Paddle retries the charge on its own schedule and emails the customer. There is no API to force an extra charge attempt.

That means the biggest lever you control is getting the customer to put a working payment method on file. Paddle’s emails are generic, single-channel and outside your brand’s voice.

What Revnio adds

Revnio doesn’t compete with Paddle’s retries; it records them as provider-managed and focuses on the customer instead.

  • A failure record for every failed transaction, with Paddle’s error code, as soon as the event arrives.
  • Branded recovery emails with a direct link to Paddle’s update-payment-method checkout for the past-due subscription.
  • WhatsApp (Pro plan) follow-ups when the email isn’t clicked. SMS is coming soon.
  • Optional subscription pause, via the Paddle API, for customers who need time.
  • Cancel flow: pause, a discount from the next renewal, a cheaper plan, or cancel at period end.
  • Win-back: customers whose subscription ended get a checkout for their old plan, optionally discounted.
  • Recovery reporting across all your Paddle subscriptions.

How the connection works

You paste a Paddle API key. Revnio detects whether it is a live or sandbox key, stores it encrypted, and creates a notification destination in your Paddle account that sends transaction, subscription and customer events to Revnio, signed with a secret only Revnio holds. It then imports your customers, subscriptions and transactions.

The key needs read access to Customers, write access to Customer portal sessions, and read and write access to Subscriptions, Transactions and Notification settings. To create one-off payment links, set a default payment link in Paddle’s checkout settings.

Set up Paddle in Revnio

  1. In Paddle, create an API key under Developer tools → Authentication with the permissions listed in Revnio.
  2. Paste it into Revnio under Settings → Integrations → Paddle.
  3. Revnio creates its notification destination in your Paddle account and starts the initial sync.
  4. Review your email and follow-up settings and turn on automations.

Frequently asked questions

Does Revnio retry Paddle payments?

No. Paddle runs its own retries for renewals and offers no API to force a charge, so Revnio leaves retries to Paddle and focuses on getting the customer to update their payment method.

Is this the Paddle Classic or Paddle Billing API?

Paddle Billing. Paddle Classic accounts are not supported.

Can I test with the Paddle sandbox?

Yes. Paste a sandbox API key and Revnio connects to Paddle’s sandbox environment automatically.

What does the customer see when they click the link?

Paddle’s own secure checkout for updating the payment method on their past-due subscription. Card details never pass through Revnio.
