Dunning emails that get cards updated
Email is the first message a customer gets when their payment fails. Revnio sends it immediately, follows up on a schedule you control, and stops the moment the payment is recovered.
Why default billing emails underperform
Most billing platforms send one plain notice from a no-reply address. Customers skim it, assume it is spam or a phishing attempt, or never see it at all. The card stays broken, retries keep failing, and the subscription quietly cancels.
A good dunning sequence is short, specific and easy to act on: it says which payment failed, how much it was for, and gives a single button that fixes the problem without logging in.
How Revnio’s recovery emails work
Every failed payment gets its own email sequence:
- The first email goes out as soon as the failure arrives from Stripe, Chargebee or Paddle; follow-ups go out on the schedule you set (in hours after the failure).
- Each email carries a secure, expiring recovery link. The customer lands on a page where they can update their card or pay the open invoice through your billing provider.
- Templates are yours: subject, copy, brand colours and variables such as customer name and amount.
- Opens and clicks are tracked per email, so you can see which message actually got the card fixed.
- A/B tests compare template variants and can promote the winner automatically once the result is significant.
- Send-time optimisation can hold follow-ups until the hour each customer usually engages.
- The sequence stops as soon as the payment succeeds. If recovery fails, an optional win-back sequence (with an optional discount) can follow.
Before the payment fails
The cheapest failed payment to recover is the one that never happens. Revnio sends card-expiry reminders 30, 14 and 7 days before a saved card expires, using the expiry dates your billing provider shares.
Getting started
- Connect Stripe, Chargebee or Paddle.
- Pick a recovery template or write your own.
- Set the email schedule (for example, immediately, then after one and three days).
- Turn on automations. Every new failed payment starts a sequence.
Frequently asked questions
How many dunning emails should I send?
Three or four over roughly two weeks is a common pattern: one immediately, then reminders spaced a few days apart, with the last one making the consequence (paused or cancelled access) clear.
Which plan includes recovery emails?
All plans, starting with Starter. Custom templates and A/B testing come with Growth.
Do customers have to log in to update their card?
No. The recovery link is tied to that failed payment and expires, so customers can fix the card in one step.
Do you have example dunning emails?
Yes, see our free dunning email templates, which you can copy and adapt.
