What insufficient_funds means

insufficient_funds means the issuer checked the balance or credit limit and it was too low for this charge. The card itself is valid and the customer usually still wants your product.

Balances change with paydays, so the same card often goes through a few days later. That makes timing the single biggest lever for this code.

Should you retry the payment?

Retry, but not immediately. Space attempts a few days apart and aim for times when accounts are more likely to be funded, such as just after common paydays at the start or middle of the month. Card networks cap how many times you can retry one charge, so a handful of well-timed attempts beats daily retries.

How to recover a subscription payment declined with insufficient_funds

  1. Schedule the first retry two to four days out rather than the next morning.
  2. Tell the customer, without blame, that the payment did not go through and that you will try again on a given date.
  3. Offer a link to switch to another card if they would rather not wait.
  4. Keep retries within network limits and stop well before the subscription would be cancelled to leave room for a final notice.

What to tell the customer

Keep it neutral: never mention their balance. Say the payment did not go through, when you will try again, and how to use a different card.

"Hi Sam, your payment of $49 for Acme did not go through. No action is needed: we will try again on Friday. If you would like to use a different card, you can update it here."

More wording for every situation is in our dunning email templates.

How Revnio handles insufficient_funds

Revnio treats insufficient_funds as temporary and schedules the next retry about a day earlier than your normal retry schedule, at 10:00 UTC on a weekday. At the same time the customer gets a recovery email with a secure link to pay or update their card, followed by WhatsApp (Pro plan) if the email is not clicked. On Paddle, Paddle runs the payment retries itself and Revnio handles the customer outreach.

Decline codes are returned by the card issuer through your payment processor. Code names here follow Stripe's; Chargebee and Paddle surface the same issuer reasons with their own wording. Last reviewed 2026-10-15.

Frequently asked questions

How long should I wait before retrying an insufficient_funds decline?

A few days is a good default. Retrying the next hour or the next morning usually fails again; retrying around common paydays tends to work better.

Should I tell the customer they had insufficient funds?

No. Say the payment did not go through. Mentioning their balance is awkward and can feel accusatory; a neutral message gets better responses.
