What card_velocity_exceeded means

card_velocity_exceeded means the card hit a limit set by the issuer: too much spent, too many transactions in a period, or the credit limit reached.

Stripe's next step is for the customer to contact their issuer, but many of these limits reset on their own after a day or a billing cycle.

Should you retry the payment?

Wait at least a day or two before retrying. Repeated same-day attempts only add to the count that caused the decline.

How to recover a subscription payment declined with card_velocity_exceeded

  1. Hold the next retry for at least a day or two.
  2. Let the customer know, and offer a link to use a different card.
  3. If it keeps failing, ask them to raise the limit with their bank.

What to tell the customer

Tell them the card hit a limit, when you will retry, and how to switch cards.

"Hi Sam, your card reached a spending limit, so this month's $49 Acme payment didn't go through. We'll try again in two days, or you can use another card here."

More wording for every situation is in our dunning email templates.

How Revnio handles card_velocity_exceeded

Revnio records card_velocity_exceeded on the failed payment, follows your retry schedule (by default 1, 3, 5 and 7 days, adjusted for the customer's value and plan, and moved to weekday business hours), and emails the customer a secure link to pay or update their card. WhatsApp (Pro plan) reminders follow if the email is not clicked. The Insights page shows how often each decline code recovers for you. On Paddle, Paddle runs the payment retries itself and Revnio handles the customer outreach.

Decline codes are returned by the card issuer through your payment processor. Code names here follow Stripe's; Chargebee and Paddle surface the same issuer reasons with their own wording. Last reviewed 2026-10-15.
