Card decline code
stop_payment_order: Stop payment order
The cardholder asked their bank to stop payments to you. Do not retry: talk to the customer, who may want to cancel or may have blocked you by mistake.
What stop_payment_order means
stop_payment_order means the bank has an instruction from the cardholder to refuse this payment, often all recurring payments to your business.
Retrying against an explicit stop order can lead to disputes and network fees.
Should you retry the payment?
Never retry. Contact the customer to find out whether they meant to cancel.
How to recover a subscription payment declined with stop_payment_order
- Stop all retries on this card.
- Email the customer to confirm whether they intended to cancel.
- If it was a mistake, ask them to lift the block or add another payment method.
- If they want to cancel, cancel cleanly; it avoids chargebacks.
What to tell the customer
Ask, politely, whether they meant to stop payments, and make both cancelling and continuing easy.
"Hi Sam, your bank stopped this month's $49 Acme payment at your request. If you'd like to keep your account, update your payment method here. If you meant to cancel, just reply and we'll take care of it."

How Revnio handles stop_payment_order
Revnio never retries a card declined with stop_payment_order automatically: the retry cannot succeed, and card networks can charge fees for reattempting declines like this one. Instead the customer gets a recovery email straight away with a secure link to add a new payment method, followed by WhatsApp (Pro plan) reminders if the email is not clicked. Once the customer adds a new card, the open invoice is collected.
Decline codes are returned by the card issuer through your payment processor. Code names here follow Stripe's; Chargebee and Paddle surface the same issuer reasons with their own wording. Last reviewed 2026-10-15.
