Card decline code
card_declined: Card declined
card_declined is the error type Stripe returns for every declined card payment. The specific reason lives in the accompanying decline_code; when there is none, treat it like a generic decline.
What card_declined means
In Stripe's API, card_declined is the error code and decline_code carries the issuer's reason (for example insufficient_funds or expired_card). Many dashboards and dunning tools show card_declined when no more detail was given.
Look at the decline_code first. If it is missing or generic_decline, the bank did not explain the refusal.
Should you retry the payment?
Follow the rule for the underlying decline_code. Without one, use a small number of spaced retries and contact the customer early.
How to recover a subscription payment declined with card_declined
- Read the decline_code on the charge to find the real reason.
- Apply the matching playbook from this reference.
- If there is no specific reason, retry a couple of times over several days and email the customer with a link to update their card.
What to tell the customer
Say the payment was declined and give them a direct link to update the card.
"Hi Sam, your card was declined for this month's $49 Acme payment. Update your payment details here and we will take care of the rest."
More wording for every situation is in our dunning email templates.
How Revnio handles card_declined
Revnio records card_declined on the failed payment, follows your retry schedule (by default 1, 3, 5 and 7 days, adjusted for the customer's value and plan, and moved to weekday business hours), and emails the customer a secure link to pay or update their card. WhatsApp (Pro plan) reminders follow if the email is not clicked. The Insights page shows how often each decline code recovers for you. On Paddle, Paddle runs the payment retries itself and Revnio handles the customer outreach.
Decline codes are returned by the card issuer through your payment processor. Code names here follow Stripe's; Chargebee and Paddle surface the same issuer reasons with their own wording. Last reviewed 2026-10-15.
