What card_not_supported means

card_not_supported means the issuer does not allow this kind of transaction on the card. Prepaid and some debit cards block recurring or cross-border payments.

Retrying the same card will fail the same way.

Should you retry the payment?

Do not retry this card. The customer needs a card that supports recurring payments.

How to recover a subscription payment declined with card_not_supported

  1. Stop retrying this card: it will not be approved again.
  2. Email the customer immediately with a one-click link to add a new payment method.
  3. Send a reminder on WhatsApp if the email goes unread.
  4. Charge the open invoice as soon as the new card is saved, then confirm by email.

What to tell the customer

Tell them this card cannot be used for subscription payments and ask them to add another.

"Hi Sam, the card on your Acme account does not support recurring payments, so we could not collect $49. Please add a different card here."
